Welcome

A Message from our Interim Program Director

Our residency was born from a need to train more family physicians to serve rural communities in the Pacific Northwest. By 2030, Oregon faces a shortfall of over 1,000 primary care physicians, and this need is most acute in rural Oregon.

Roseburg, our community of 23,000, is located one-hour south of Eugene, OR. We are rural, but not frontier. We have a well-equipped and well-staffed hospital with a wide variety of specialists and technology to help us train you to provide the highest quality comprehensive primary care to patients across the life continuum.

Our mission is to train exceptional family physicians who are ideally suited for rural practice in the 21st Century. We have worked tirelessly to lay out the framework for the curriculum. We utilize a block schedule with 13 (four-week) rotation blocks that take full advantage of our wealth of clinical experience in adult medicine, urgent care, emergency care, care of substance use disorders and a large veteran population. We have included several blocks of elective time in years two and three that can be used to augment procedural, maternity care, hospitalist and urgent care skill sets allowing residents to tailor their residency experience to their interests and planned future practice. Our goal is to prepare you to become an exceptional family physician.

Our residency is unique in that we have two family practice centers and residents see patients in each center. At our main family practice center, Aviva Health, residents work alongside faculty to provide high-quality, compassionate care to all patients. Additionally, in the second and third year, residents will care for veterans ½ day per week in a family practice center located on the Roseburg VA Medical Center Campus.

Each of our faculty have unique interests, talents and skills they bring to residency experience. All are passionate about caring for their patients, community and helping to train the next generation of physicians.  Roseburg Family Medicine Residency program is truly a community venture and partnership between our sole-community hospital and our primary family medicine practice clinic, Aviva Health. In 2017, Mercy Medical Center was named one of the Top 20 Rural Community Hospitals in the nation. Aviva Health is Douglas County’s first Tier 5 Patient-centered Primary Care Home – the highest designation offered by the Oregon Health Authority. Roseburg is a Blue Zones Project™ Demonstration Site working to improve social determents of health. Moreover, Roseburg and the surrounding cities are excited to welcome you to our larger community.

If you’re interested in joining our residency, we expect you to be competent, caring, compassionate and ethical individuals. We are looking for residents who have a passion for lifelong learning with an entrepreneurial mindset and a pioneering spirit. You should enjoy the outdoors and/or rural living. You should have a habit of taking your work seriously, but not taking yourself too seriously. Our residents, especially the first several classes, will have a large impact on where the residency is headed and will help sculpt our program. The residents will help to establish the culture of our residency. We want residents who can partner with the faculty and the community to create the best residency program.

If you believe you have what it takes to be one of these pioneering residents, we want you to join us in this great adventure. You will not be disappointed in the quality of education you receive or the sense of belonging you will experience as part of our residency family.
