Our Mission, Vision & Educational Goals

Our Mission

To train exceptional Family Physicians who are ideally suited for rural practice in the 21st Century. Our graduates will be competent, caring, compassionate and ethical physicians, who are at home in rural Oregon, and are culturally competent in the primary care of a diverse rural population.

Our Vision

To be recognized as a program with commitment to training extraordinary family medicine physicians that embrace our community, feel at home in rural Roseburg, Oregon and treat each patient as if they were his/her family member.

Our Educational Goals

We train Family Physicians to:

  • Provide comprehensive, team-based care for patients with a broad range of medical conditions across the spectrum of acute illness, chronic illness and preventive health planning.
  • Use evidence-based, patient-centered, cost-conscious decision-making for diagnosis, treatment and management of patients.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams within the Patient-Centered Primary Care Home (PCPCH) in rural and underserved areas of Oregon and across the Pacific Northwest.
  • Communicate efficiently, compassionately, empathetically, and delicately during patient, family and community encounters.
  • Use cutting-edge technology, such as telemedicine, and other innovative tools to provide the best possible care for their patients.
  • Be culturally competent to serve diverse populations in rural communities.
  • Be effective and efficient lifelong learners, striving to understand our diverse, ever-changing population of patients.
  • Be knowledgeable in the prevention and treatment of substance and opioid abuse, and be trained in Medication–Assisted Therapy (MAT).
  • Learn to use Lifestyle Medicine, evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic intervention—including a whole-food eating pattern, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connection—as a method to prevent, and treat chronic disease.
