Preparing future healthcare providers through clinical experience, community, and guided support during the gap year.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n

The ReConnect Fellowship supports pre-health graduates during their gap year as they prepare for medical or physician assistant school. Located in Roseburg, Oregon, fellows work full time as medical scribes and\/or medical assistants in Federally Qualified Health Centers and Rural Health Clinics\u2014family practice environments dedicated to caring for medically underserved communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond clinical experience, ReConnect offers connection and community. Fellows join a cohort of peers on the same path, gathering outside of work for social dinners, professional development, and intentional guidance through the medical or PA school application journey.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe the ReConnect program was an integral part of not only becoming a well-rounded applicant, but also of guiding me towards pursuing a career in rural health. \u201cThe hands-on experience I gained in patient care and working in a rural setting really helped me stand out during the medical school application cycle and currently amongst my medical school peers. It is pretty clear that compared to a good handful of classmates, I have a better level of comfort with patient interactions, hands-on interactions with patients, and working in resource-limited areas. Many faculty members in my school seem impressed by my aspirations to be in rural medicine, and this experience helped me realize that I prefer the challenges of working in a rural setting compared to other environments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would not have moved to rural Oregon and experienced working in a rural healthcare setting if not for the ReConnect Fellowship program. I got to experience working in a setting where patients may not have seen primary care in over 10+ years, patients who historically have not sought health services due to inability to apply for health insurance, and patients who overall just wanted someone to listen and enhance their quality of life. The ReConnect Fellowship program, especially the staff and events held with everyone in the cohort, made me feel grounded whenever I felt frustrated and alone, and I am thankful for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMi tiempo como becario ReConnect fue fundamental en mi camino hacia la medicina. Me brind\u00f3 experiencia cl\u00ednica, mentor\u00eda y una perspectiva muy pr\u00e1ctica sobre la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica rural, que luego pude aplicar en mis solicitudes de ingreso a la facultad de medicina. Mi participaci\u00f3n en este programa me ayud\u00f3 much\u00edsimo a ser aceptado en el programa Rural-PRIME de UC Davis SOM, lo que molde\u00f3 mi experiencia en la facultad de medicina y mi camino hacia la residencia.
